Our Story

GreenTurf was born in the spring of 2001.  While working as a local agronomist Justin decided to start a small business on the side working with homeowners to provide premium lawn care programs.  We started with maybe six customers our first year.  Over the next few years through word of mouth the business was growing at an amazing pace.  By the fall of 2005 it was obvious we had to make a change and so with two young children we made a leap of faith and Justin quit his agronomy job to focus on growing GreenTurf.

The first few years we were growing and adding services almost every year.  We were investing in more equipment every year.   First we started adding commercial lawn mowers as our commercial property maintenance grew.  Then, after several years of servicing sprinkler systems, we added a pipe pulling machine and began installing sprinklers.  Since 2008 we have installed over 100 sprinkler system in both residential and large commercial properties all over southwest NE and northwest KS.

As our retaining wall and patio segment started to take off we soon needed more equipment, so we added a stand on skid loader and dump trailer to haul materials.  Once we had the capability to take a small loader into back yards and tight spaces with badly tearing up lawns that segment grew as well.

In 2018 we finally began construction on our barndominium home that is a large building with a shop and living quarters all under one roof.  We now live on site where we work and play.  We have room to service all of our equipment and store it all inside to keep it in great shape ready to work for you!  We also have a full service sod farm right outside our front door where we meticulously care for it, so when you buy sod from us you are getting a piece of our front yard and a piece of our journey that started from nothing nearly 20 years ago.

Justin Harris

Justin is a native of McCook, NE.  His first job was a lawn mowing business started at the age of about 11.  By age 16 he made a move to Hinky Dinky grocery store to get more social interaction at work.  At age 18 he also pursued his desire to gain experience in agriculture and started working for the Blackrose Angus Ranch as a hired hand.  Many life lessons were learned by a kid from town all of a sudden working with cattle, hogs, grinding feed, fixing and building fence.  While working at the Blackrose he still worked at Hinky Dinky from time to time as well as Jewell wholesale, now known as Nick's Distribution.  Every single one of his jobs was great learning experience and making connections with so many other people and business owners was priceless.

After graduating MHS in 1995 Justin attended McCook Community College and majored in agriculture which they offered at the time. It's at MCC where Justin met Kaylynn Ross and they fell in love and began dating.   After graduating MCC Justin attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.  Majoring in agronomy and working a lot of hours at a local car parts chain made their time in Lincoln go fast and after 4 more semesters and a Bachelor's degree in Agronomy he was back in McCook with his first full-time job at Frenchman Valley Coop.

Kaylynn "Ross" Harris

Kaylynn grew up in Madrid, Nebraska with her parents and three older brothers.  She had many nieces and nephews that she watched growing up for her brothers and their wives.  He parents owned a mechanic shop in town where her brothers worked while she was growing up and eventually her parents bought a windshield repair and replacement business and hit the road.

Kaylynn graduated from Wheatland High school in 1995 and moved to McCook to attend MCC.  Kaylynn was studying early childhood development and worked in the college daycare.  Once Justin and Kaylynn met they were inseparable.  Right away they almost knew they would spend their lives together and raise a family.

Kaylynn is the mother of our four wild and free spirited children.  Wyatt, born in 2001; Lane, born 2004; the twins Jax and Gemma born in 2010.  After Lane was born Kaylynn stayed home raising her two boys and helping the business from time to time.  In 2010 we were blessed with twins and an 8 week stay at the NICU in Lincoln.  Gemma is an amazingly big-hearted girl with a undying love for all animals, particularly horses.  Jax is also an amazingly loving kid.  He loves to give hugs and kisses, even if he doesn't know you well.  Jax was born with Down syndrome and that's the reason our family has become so involved with awareness for kids with intellectual disabilities in our community.  He is energetic, fun loving, smart, sneaky, and very protective of his siblings and cousins.

Wyatt Harris

Wyatt is our first born son and has been involved with our business from the time he was old enough to walk and use tools.   We used to have fun with Wyatt when he was a little kid and call him the "supervisor" and boy did that ever go to his head because now he thinks he runs the place.

Wyatt knows all aspects of the business and is honing his skills every season with some of the aspects that Justin mostly took care of while he was younger.  Wyatt us very dedicated towards getting work done when it needs done and committed to customer service quality work.

Wyatt is graduating in 2020 and planning to attend NCTA in Curtis to get a associated degree in agronomy with a horticulture emphasis.  Wyatt is planning to continue to be a large part of GreenTurf while he furthers his education and upon graduation will become co-operator with Justin as the business continues to grow.

Wyatt's hobbys are diesel trucks, shooting, camping, and ATVs.

Lane Harris

Lane is our second child and is currently a freshman at McCook High.  Lane has been helping us more the past couple years and is starting to learn the ropes.  He will spend the summer of 2020 on the mowing crew getting to know our customers and their properties.

Lane is involved with track and is working hard at hurdles.  Lane is also attempting to bring the "mullet" back into style while driving his 1991 Ford van that was a former FBI surveillance van and is being converted to a camper van.  Lane also really enjoys shooting sports, camping, and ATVs.
